Anatomy of a High-Performance Silicone Rubber Key
Designing a custom silicone interface requires a deep understanding of material behavior under compression. At the heart of every silicone rubber key is the web section—the thin, angled area of silicone surrounding the keytop. When pressed, the web deforms elastically, creating the tactile "snap" sensation before the conductive element makes contact with the PCB. Our engineering team at CMAI carefully calculates this geometry to achieve the targeted actuation force and tactile feedback.
Backlighting and Graphics Options
To enable operation in low-light environments, we utilize translucent silicone raw materials. By applying a base layer of translucent silicone, spraying a dark opaque coating, and then laser-etching away the dark coating to form legends, light can pass through the keytop cleanly. Additionally, we use advanced screen printing and pad printing techniques for multi-colored graphics, ensuring high-contrast labels that resist wear.
Integrating Plastic and Metal (P+R Keypads)
For applications requiring the premium feel of rigid plastic with the sealing properties of silicone, CMAI manufactures Plastic+Rubber (P+R) keypads. By bonding custom molded plastic keycaps or metal caps onto a silicone rubber membrane base, we provide the tactile stability of thermoplastic buttons paired with the flexible sealing benefits of an elastomer underlay. This design is highly popular in premium consumer electronics and high-end automotive dashboards.
